Round 3 saw the Taipans host Inner West Magic at URAC. With Development Boys and Girls kicking off the day, there was plenty of good Futsal over the day to keep the players and parents entertained.
The Taipans 12 Boys had an impressive start to the new season however they faced the side this week that won the State Titles a month ago and was looking to get their season back on track after going down last week. Inner West raced out of the blocks early going 2-0 up before the Taipans settled back into the game. It was end to end from that point and the Taipans gave as good as they got however a third goal midway through the second half to Magic gave the Taipans a mountain to climb. Despite pulling a goal back, the Taipans weren’t able to recover from the start succumbing to their first loss of the season 1-3.
The 13 Girls have endured a tough start to the season and things weren’t about to get easier as they had their regular keeper unavailable for this match. After keeping up with Magic for the early part of the match, Inner West opened the scoring and sadly, things got worse for the Taipans as Inner West piled on eight unanswered goals to comfortably take out the match. The girls will look to regroup next week.
It’s been a slow start to the season for the 14 Boys as well although there were encouraging signs last week. The boys once again found themselves behind and playing batch up. For the second consecutive week, they found themselves 3-0 down at half time and although they drew the second half, they could not overcome the deficit going down 4-1.
The 15 Girls were looking to maintain their perfect start to the season against a very good Inner-West side with championship aspirations. The game started at a frenetic pace with both sides looking to assert their authority. One felt the first goal of the match was going to be crucial and with both sides unable to break the deadlock during the first half, things started to get tense. The Taipans managed to get on the scoresheet early in the second half and with the clock ticking down, Inner West managed to nab an equaliser late in the game to share the spoils 1-1.
The 16 boys next took to the court and were looking to follow up their impressive win last week with another 3 points. Things were looking good early as the Taipans skipped away to a 3-0 lead only for Inner West to pull a goal back just before the break. The teams traded goals midway through the half before one of the Taipans players saw red. Inner West were unable to initially capitalise but did manage to pull a goal back with minutes left to set up a grandstand finish however the Taipans had the last laugh grabbing a last minute goal to close out the match 5-3.
The 17 Girls match saw two evenly matches sides go head on. Just like the 15 Girls match, both sides looked to cancel each other out. A well taken goal saw the visitors take a 1-0 lead at the break but the Taipans girls were not about to lie down. They fought hard through the second half and were rewarded with an equaliser which they deserved on the balance of things. There were a few close calls at both ends but no further goals were added as the teams had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
The AWD team took on Sydney CIty Eagles which was a rematch of the State Titles Grand Final only a few weeks ago. The Eagles proved to be tough competition for the high flying Taipans who did not have things all their way for a change. Despite going up 1-0 midway through the first half, the Taipans conceded to see the scores locked at 1-1 at half time. Not used to being level, the Taipans moved up a gear and peppered the Eagles goal through the second half. Goals started to flow as the Taipans ran out 4-1 winners.
The Youth boys are starting to show some form and they totally dominated their match against the winless Magic. The boys managed to take a 1-0 lead at the break and they went on with it during the second half scoring four more times to record a comprehensive 5-0 win. The win and goal differential sees them climb to third place on goal difference.
The Women’s have had a tough start to their season playing the top four teams in the opening rounds. They had failed to score inside the opening two games but the ladies looked to be up for this match. They hit the lead through the first half with a fine goal however their lead was lost late in the first half as they found themselves in foul trouble as they conceded what effectively was a penalty. With top spot on the line, Inner West upped the ante in the second half and broke the Taipans down on two occasions to take the match 3-1.
The Taipans men have never beaten Inner West and with teams on opposite sides of the ladder, one would have expected the visitors to stroll past the Taipans who were missing a couple of key players. Inner West took the lead midway through the half only to see it cancelled out with a strike by the Taipans. Both keepers were kept busy through the half with no further score. The Taipans stuck it to their more fancied opponents and were not about to give in. The visitors scored from a set piece mid way through the second half. The Taipans had the visitors in foul trouble late in the game however the Taipans could not draw a foul and despite going close on a couple of occasions, the visitors held on to win 2-1.
Overall, a disappointing day for the club as we picked up only 8 points. We need to start converting some of these draws and narrow losses into wins.
The Taipans travel to Dural next week with some important games on the schedule.
